Wood Species

The Red Pine or Norway Pine, is native to North America, ranging from the upper great lakes area through southern Canada and west to Manitoba. This species can even be found as far south as West Virginia. Red Pine is a natural choice for log homes because they grow tall, with straight clear trunks. They grow very quickly during their first 60 to 70 years, making reforestation projects easier and more sensible with this species.

Log Type

The milled Swedish Cope log is today’s modern evolution of one of the oldest methods used in log home construction. The milled Swedish cope log system ensures precision and consistency.

The Swedish cope log profile is the closest in appearance and feel to that of a handcrafted log home, with all of the benefits of a milled log.

It is the opinion of many log home professionals, including our own, that the Swedish cope log system offers many advantages over other systems.  Swedish cope logs not only look great, but also offer many real-world advantages.  The natural curvature of this profile tightly overlaps the log below, making it easy to effectively seal between log courses.  Moisture infiltration is also less likely since the moisture would need to travel up the curvature of the log.

We currently offer logs in 7”, 8”, 9”, 10”, 12”, and 15” inch diameters.
Other custom diameters can be made available. Our logs are available in lengths of up to 30’.  Our standard packages include all logs cut to specified lengths. All logs are measured, numbered, and lettered as specified per your construction plans.  Not having to cut logs on site saves onsite construction time, allowing construction crews to reach the crucial dry-in stage faster. Having the entire package machine cut also ensures accuracy and consistency in your log package, eliminating the possibility of mis-cuts and mistakes.

Fastener System

At Grand Arbor, our goal of creating a stable log structure is further reinforced by using ½” lag bolts.  These threaded fasteners draw courses together tightly, creating compression and vastly reducing settling movement.  With no negative air space between courses, the use of insulation is not necessary, therefore eliminating the danger of water damage associated with the moisture-retaining properties of insulation.  This is where we incorporate our closed-cell foam gasket.  Its design ensures an airtight fit between log courses for the life of your home.

Moisture Content

We use kiln-dried logs for many reasons, most of which can be summed up into one word... Control.  In a kiln, the removal of moisture and the conditioning of logs can be closely monitored and controlled.  Kiln drying removes much of the log’s weight as well, making them easier to handle and work with.  The drying of logs ensures that caulks, interior finish and more importantly, exterior finish can be applied effectively and immediately.  Removal of moisture can be achieved at safer rates, minimizing checking (cracking) and twisting of the wood.  Another benefit of kiln drying logs prior to milling gives you the ability to reject logs that do not make the grade.  This prevents logs that have adverse reactions to drying and curing from being used in log home packages.  This ensures that your home will be just as beautiful years from now as it will be on the day you move in.

Mill Advantages

Milling produces a more uniform and consistent log, making construction easier, faster, more precise and airtight.  Milling logs not only provides superior product, but also is a more cost effective way to build with logs, eliminating much of the time and labor required in hand-scribed log homes.

Half Log Siding

For those of you out there looking for a conventionally constructed home or maybe just looking for a little more flexibility on interior wall coverings, while still getting the look and feel of an authentic full log home, log siding may be for you.  These half log packages are comprised of an exterior wall that is conventionally framed, fully insulated, and wrapped with one of our two styles of half-log siding.  When using our insulated half-log wall system, you have the option of using sheet rock, pine or cedar tongue and groove, or even half logs for your interior wall coverings.  This half log wall system allows excellent design flexibility, and building can be easier for the do-it-yourselfer.

The Grand Arbor insulated log wall system is offered in two different corner styles; full saddle and corner post.  These two styles are offered in six sizes, giving you the ability to choose the log size just right for the look and feel of your home.
